TATU is a Russian duo formed in Moscow, Russia in 1999 by Ivan Shapovalov. The group consists of Lena Katina and Yulia Volkova. Ivan Shapovalov and his business partner Alexander Voitinskyi decided to hold auditions for a new group they wanted to form in early 1998. After they cast the two girls thus completing the duo, the producers decided on the name Tatu. It is a shortened version from the Russian "Eta devushka lyubit tu devushku", meaning "This girl loves that girl". In 2001 they released their debut albu ,200 Po Vstrechnoy. Due to the sales of this CD, t.A.T.u. became the first eastern European group to receive a IFPI Platinum Award. They then released their second studio album and their first English language on in December of 2002. It was entitled "200 km/h in the Wrong Lane" and has since gone on to receive a gold certification in the United States. In 2004, the group took a hiatus after they split from their producer. In 2005, they released Dangerous and Moving and Lyudi Invalidy. During 2006, TATU released a compilation album and then ventured on their own after negotiating out of their contract with Universal Music. Tatu has since gone on to release four more studio albums and thirteen singles. On May 31st, 2009 TATU celebrated its 10th anniversary.
