Foo Fighters is an American rock band formed by singer/guitarist/drummer Dave Grohl in 1995 in Seattle, Washington. Grohl formed the group as a one-man project after the dissolution of his previous band Nirvana in 1994. Grohl drafted Nate Mendel (bass), William Goldsmith (drums), and Pat Smear (guitar) to complete the group. William Goldsmith and Pat Smear left the group in 1997 and 1999 respectively. The current lineup includes Dave Grohl, Nate Mendel, Taylor Hawkins and Chris Shiflett. In 1995 they released their self titled debut album. It was nominated for Best Alternative Music Album at the 1996 Grammy ceremony, but it lost to Dave Grohl’s former band Nirvana’s album MTV Unplugged In New York. In 1997 they released their second album, The Colour and the Shape. The album reached number three in the UK and number ten in the United States. It was also a Grammy nominee for Best Rock Album in 1998. Since then they have released four albums which include There Is Nothing Left to Lose (1999), One by One (2002), In Your Honor (2005) and Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace (2007). Over the course of the band’s career, three of its albums have won Grammy Awards for Best Rock Album, and all six have been nominated for Grammys.
