David Archuleta was born on December 28, 1990 in Miami, Florida to Jeff Archuleta and Lupe Marie. David Archuleta’s family moved to the city of Sandy, Utah, when Archuleta was six. That’s the same age when he started singing inspired by a Les Miserables video. He has since cited his musical influences as Natalie Cole, Stevie Wonder, Kirk Franklin and Bryan Adams. When he listed his top pop music artists, he cited Natasha Bedingfield, Natalie Cole, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Bryan Adams, Kirk Franklin, and Robbie Williams. In 2003, at the age of twelve, David Archuleta sang on several episodes of the television variety show Star Search. At the age of 16 he competed on the television show American Idol. David Archuleta won his ticket to the Hollywood final auditions at the San Diego tryouts at the end of July 2007. He performed John Mayer’s song "Waiting on the World to Change". In the finale he sang "Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me", "In This Moment" and "Imagine. He ended up losing to David Cook, garnering 44 percent of the vote. In June 2008, Archuleta signed with Jive Records and in August of 2008 released his self titled debut album. The album was certified Gold by the RIAA on January 29, 2009.
