Beck Hansen is an American musician, singer and songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist known by the stage name Beck. He was born on July 8, 1970 in Los Angeles, California to David Campbell, a Canadian musician, and Bibbe Hansen, a visual artist. After dropping out of high school in the mid-1980s, Beck traveled to Europe and developed his musical talent by playing music on the streets for tips. In 1994, Beck released his major label debut album titled Mellow Gold. Mellow Gold reached number thirteen in the U.S., and number forty one in the UK. In 1996, Beck released his sophomore album, Odelay. The album peaked at #16 on the Billboard 200 chart and eventually sold over 2 million copies in the United States. It was also Beck’s first hit album in the United Kingdom, making it to number seventeen; it has since gone platinum in the UK. Odelay featured several hit singles, including "Where It’s At", "Devils Haircut," and "The New Pollution". Odelay was awarded Album of the Year by American magazine Rolling Stone and by UK publications NME and Mojo. Odelay also received a Grammy nomination for Best Album.Beck has since released 6 major label albums and sold 7 million copies in the United States and around 15 million worldwide.
