Backstreet Boys was formed on April 20, 1993 by boy band mogul Lou Pearlman. The band consist of Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell, A. J. McLean, Nick Carter. Pearlman had spent around $3.5 million on his search to form the group, and then spent more to launch their career. In 1996 they launched their self titled debut album which was released internationally. Then in 1997 they launched their U.S debut also entitled Backstreet Boys. The album peaked at #4 on the Billboard charts and has been certified platinum over fourteen times over. In May of 1999 they released Millenium, an album that would rocket them to super stardom. Millennium entered the Billboard 200 at number one, where it remained for 10 non-consecutive weeks. It sold over a million copies it’s first week. It was their first record to be released in both the U.S. and internationally in the same form, at the same time. In the United States, it holds the record for most shipments in one year, with 11 million in 1999. Since then they have released three more albums, have sold more than one hundred million albums and have had 13 Top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 making them the best selling boy band of all time. Backstreet boys is currently working on their seventh album to be released in 2009.
